123. Very few players are known more by their nicknames among fans than they are their real ones. For Ed Jones, that was the case as he forever became known as “Too Tall.” It’s easy to understand why. The man was a 6’9″, 270 lbs monstrosity drafted by the Dallas Cowboys out of small Tennessee State in 1975. He was a mystery to many as no player from such a small program had been drafted that high before. Dallas felt their scouting system had found a hidden gem. They were right.

Jones became one of the lynch pins to their great defenses of the 1970s and early 1980s. He ended up playing 224 games, went to three Pro Bowls, helped the team reach three Super Bowls and win a Lombardi trophy in 1977. Even into his mid-30s he was a force, collecting 13 sacks at 34 and 10 at 36. If he hadn’t played on such great teams that were loaded with star power, he might get more recognition these days.
.
