It’s never too early to look to the future for the Chicago Bears. Based on early indications, how does their situation project for the NFL draft in 2017?

Not the easiest question to answer since the team hasn’t played any actual games yet. Sometimes positions that look like big weaknesses can morph into strengths due to the unexpected rise productive players. Even so, there are at least some question marks scattered across the roster that are likely to still be there next spring. So here is an early mock draft based on that outlook.

1st Round

1. player. 57. The front office has done quite a job reloading the roster with young talent at almost every position. Still, some areas just couldn’t get the same attention as others. A big one was tight end. Trading Martellus Bennett was a tough pill to swallow, but one that had to happen. He was a distraction a young team couldn’t handle. Still, his exit leaves the job on the shaky legs of Zach Miller. Though he’s quite productive when on the field, he’s had a hard time staying on it. Last season marked the first time since 2011 he hadn’t been lost the entire year to injury.

Smart money says the Bears will move quickly to bolster both the talent and the depth at that position early next year. If they were able to land O.J. Howard from Alabama, it would be a game-changer. The 6’6″, 240 lbs monster showed just how deadly he can be in the passing game when he gashed Clemson in the national championship for over 200 yards. Put him on the field between Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White? One will pity those poor defenses.
. TE. Alabama. O.J Howard
