#31:  John Robinson (Los Angeles Rams)

This is quite the upset.  Many will ask right away how in the world that Dick Vermeil isn’t the choice here, or Mike Martz or George Allen, or Chuck Knox?  While Vermeil does have the claim of being the only one to win a championship, he only coached the Rams for three seasons.  Martz was good for his first few years but lost the Super Bowl in 2001 with what was a superior team.  One he didn’t build.  Allen had a great winning percentage but his teams managed to reach just two playoff games.  As for Knox, he would’ve been the choice given his outstanding success in the 1970s but he ruined that when he returned for three years from 1992 to 1994 and went 15-33.

John Robinson is not a name that comes to mind right away but it’s hard to argue with his results.  He coached the team for nine seasons and finished with a 75-68 record.  His teams made the playoffs six times and reached two NFC championship games.  He just had the greatest bad luck of running into two of the best teams in NFL history, the 1985 Chicago Bears and the 1989 San Francisco 49ers.  Had he ever figured out his quarterback situation his legacy today might be better appreciated.
