It’s never too early to start looking ahead as the Chicago Bears are no doubt already doing.  Which 2017 NFL free agents could be potential targets for them?

Much of that depends on what happens in the next few months.  Positions that still look like weaknesses now could turn out to be strengths.  There may be unexpected injuries that force the team to think about making changes.  It’s difficult to predict what might happen, but based on what is known right now here are some names to watch carefully.

Dee Milliner (CB)

Among the things that stood out regarding the Bears 2016 off-season is the lack of significant movement at the cornerback position.  Kyle Fuller and Tracy Porter were the primary starters last season and it appears that won’t change.  The only significant addition made to that group is 4th round pick Deiondre Hall.  Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has a reputation for turning unheralded corners into productive players, so it’s clear that’s what the Bears are hoping with the 6’2” kid from Northern Iowa.

It’s also why they might gravitate to signing Dee Milliner.  In many ways he’s their kind of free agent:  young (25), a former 1st round pick and likely to command a cheaper contract due to the struggles he went through in New York, namely due to injury.  When healthy and allowed to play, he’s shown the traits of a solid cover corner with size and speed.  Why not give him to Fangio and roll the dice?
