The Washington Redskins used their top pick on WR Josh Doctson, but they may have found a gem in Reggie Diggs out of Richmond after the draft…
The Washington Redskins put together a very interesting offseason, headlined by the addition of Josh Norman to their secondary and Josh Doctson to the wide receiver group. Their draft was underrated in my opinion, but you also can’t forget about the $20 million investment in QB Kirk Cousins.
The Redskins have done everything in their power this offseason to surround Cousins with the best group of talent possible. Obviously the addition of Doctson in the first round is a major move for this franchise, but the Redskins made a move after the draft that could wind up paying dividends.
While they have assembled a very good young group of receivers in Washington D.C., there’s a name at the bottom of the depth chart worth monitoring, and it’s former Richmond Spiders star Reggie Diggs.
Diggs, a 6-3, 214 pound prospect, was incredibly productive for the Spiders and comes into the NFL as one of the draft community’s favorite sleeper prospects at the receiver position. After having his meniscus torn at Redskins OTAs, Diggs is making his way to a full recovery and is expected to be ready to compete in training camp.
While the injury is a setback, there’s no denying the Redskins have a talent on their hands here. Diggs is an impressive athletic specimen who doesn’t run a blazing 40 yard dash (4.55) but has explosive leaping ability and strong hands.
At his pro day, Diggs ran the aforementioned 4.55 in the 40, but also posted a 38-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot broad jump. Those numbers would have been among the best at the Scouting Combine.
A highlight reel isn’t always going to tell you the whole story, but a strong reel of plays put together along with a consistency of production and impressive athletic measurables indicate to me that a prospect at least has a shot, which is why I’ve identified Diggs as the Redskins’ top undrafted free agent gem.

There will be great competition for the fourth/fifth receiver spots in Washington, and this guy has as good a chance as any of sticking. His size combined with his ability to win jump balls and pluck the ball out of the air are strong traits for a young receiver. This is the kind of athlete wide receiver coaches love to work with, because the potential is unlimited if they can teach him the nuances of the game.
I’m really looking forward to training camp reports and how Diggs is progressing, as well as seeing him in action in the preseason. I think the Redskins may have gotten not only the best receiver in the draft in Josh Doctson, they may well have found the next best thing on the UDFA market in Diggs.
