The Jacksonville Jaguars unearthed a gem in UDFA WR Allen Hurns — can they do it again with Louisiana-Lafayette’s Jamal Robinson?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have one of the top young wide receiver pairings in the NFL in Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, but could they be joined soon by undrafted receiver Jamal Robinson of Louisiana-Lafayette?

Coming into the 2014 season, the expectations were high for the 6-1, 215 pound receiver. He didn’t disappoint through three games, scoring four touchdowns, but his season was cut short due to injury…

Robinson’s 2015 season was a nice rebound year, catching 54 passes with five touchdowns and averaging nearly 16 yards per reception. It’s easy to see how he’s able to win with both speed and strength on the outside, but there needs to be some refinement to his game as a route runner.

That’s something that can be worked on, and should be something the Jaguars can get under control soon. This is a top flight talent in terms of height, weight, and speed, recording between 4.37 and 4.47 at his pro day this Spring. He also threw up 24 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, more than any of his Louisiana-Lafayette teammates (including linemen).

He also posted a 36.5-inch vertical jump after scouts measured him at 6-1, which he took some issue with. So did his teammates, apparently, one of them saying he looks him ‘in the eye’ at just under 6-5.

For his whole career at ULL, Robinson was listed at 6-4, and he looks big when you watch him on the field. He goes after jump balls, tracks the ball really well, and has a long stride to get to his top speed.

You’ve got to think there are one or two receiver positions up for grabs in Jacksonville behind Robinson, Huns, Marqise Lee, and Rashad Greene. If the big, strong, speedy Jamal Robinson can find his way onto the active roster, it will just be another big time weapon for ascending young quarterback Blake Bortles, who had a really nice season statistically in 2015.

Robinson will have to prove himself in camp and the preseason like all other rookies, but the skills are there for him to be an effective option at least at some point down the road. He’s a nice undrafted gem for the Jaguars.
