Rookie Fantasy Football Impact: Running Backs
By Sam Weaver
Ezekiel Elliott: Ezekiel Elliot was the number four player off the board in April, and the obvious choice for a draftable back for fantasy purposes. Zeke is in a prime situation in Dallas, running behind a stellar offensive line that propelled Demarco Murray to a leading rusher title two seasons ago.
Zeke may have a questionable situation as far as carries to start out with. He joins veterans Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden, both of whom are servicable backs in their own rights. But such a high draft pick must speak to Dallas’ faith in Zeke, and the expectation is that he will be their go-to guy at some point in the season.
Bottom Line: Zeke comes into an ideal situation in Dallas, with an exceptional offensive line to provide lanes. But the rookie will have to show his worth and beat out Morris and McFadden for the number one slot if he is to have the fantasy potential that most of us are hoping for. That being said, Zeke is one of the few rookies who should be looked at in the earlier rounds of your draft.
Devontae Booker: The Denver Broncos selected Devontae Booker in the second round of the draft. He will join C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman as the big names at Denver’s running back position.
Booker has the potential and talent to move into a starting role with the Broncos. C.J. Anderson seems to take a few games to get going, and if he falters this season, Denver could turn to Booker and never look back. His carries should be hefty if he gains a starting role, and his team could put him in a position to put up solid fantasy points.
Bottom Line: Booker steps into a tricky situation in Denver, looking to surpass Anderson and Hillman in the Broncos’ run game. If he can get his carries, Booker could be a big playmaker for Denver. He should get some time to shine this season, and may be worth a late round selection for your fantasy football team.
