Jacoby Brissett was one of the lesser discussed quarterbacks of the 2016 NFL draft. He didn’t have the winning record like Wentz, the pro-readiness of Goff or the same said potential of Paxton Lynch.

However, Brissett does have the perfect build and set of skills to be what the Patriots are looking for in their heir to Tom Brady, assuming he doesn’t quite make it to the year 2025.

Brissett came from North Carolina State where he threw for 5,268 yards, 43 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his only two seasons there. Despite having a productive two years, Brissett only had one receiver top 600 yards (Bo Hines had 616 in 2014) and dealt with an offense that didn’t have any true weapons to work with. He was also a productive runner as he put up nearly 1,000 yards on the ground for nine rushing touchdowns. Brissett’s best asset may come as being a pure playmaker. While he can find himself in trouble at times, Brissett has the best escape ability out of any quarterback in this draft class and likely up there with some of the top players already in the NFL.

Brissett created plays out of thin air seemingly every week, his play and ability are all influenced by his houdini-like playmaking ability. At 6’4 and over 230 pounds, Brissett can be a load to bring down, especially given his thick lower body and excellent balance.

Jimmy Garoppolo was the Patriot’s second round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He hasn’t quite had his shot at being the starter in New England but there are signs that Belichick could be leaning towards Brissett as the future and not Garoppolo. For one, Brissett’s hand size is larger than Garoppolo’s, a factor when considering the weather up in Boston. Second, Brissett is known for fitting the ball in tight windows and he’s comfortable with spreading the ball around, something the Patriot’s would look for in their next quarterback.

Third, the leadership qualities that Brissett provides are vital for him being the future for the Patriots. While he was above and beyond the best talent at NC State, Brissett was able to lead his team and show by example why they should trust in him to win. The wins may not have came as often as liked, but the motivation and drive was embedded in Brissett during those moments.

It’s an early speculation and may not amount to anything but the value that Brissett brings to the Patriots may move him up the depth chart sooner than expected. If the preseason goes well and Garappolo struggles, Brissett may be the guy under center until Brady returns.
