Iowa Hawkeyes LB Josey Jewell a star in the making
Iowa Hawkeyes linebacker Josey Jewell, entering his junior season, is a star in the making. How good can he be in his third season?
Nothing reminds me why I love football better than watching players who play the game like Iowa Hawkeyes linebacker Josey Jewell.
Now a junior, the former two-star recruit from Decorah, Iowa has developed into a star player, and one that might go overlooked on a Hawkeyes defense that features one of the best players on that side of the ball in the country — defensive back Desmond King.
Jewell’s elite production from the 2015 season, however, cannot be ignored. What this guy did is simply remarkable, and not enough people are talking about it. So we’re going to.
Jewell finished his sophomore campaign with 126 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four interceptions, and a forced fumble. He was constantly around the football from the minute Iowa kicked off their season, to the minute they went down in a crushing defeat to the Stanford Cardinal.
This guy was simply incredible all year.
It’s hard not to love this kid. He just gets after it every single play. You don’t luck into 126 tackles, and you don’t just happen to be in the frame every snap of a game defensively. Not only is Jewell a tackling machine, but you can see that he has rare instincts for the position and is equally effective in pursuit as he is in coverage as well as blitzing the quarterback and taking on blockers.

As the year progresses and we see more of what Jewell can do, NFL scouts are going to be drooling at the chance to draft him to their teams.
We have one full season of incredible highlights to watch of Jewell just destroying anyone that comes near him, but we can’t forget also that this was a productive player as a freshman back in 2014. He finished his rookie year in college football with 51 total tackles as a rotational player.
The way this guy plays the game should be inspiring to those who love football. Fall can’t come soon enough.
