2016 NFL Season: Final Record Predictions For All 32 Teams
By Erik Lambert
San Diego Chargers (4-12)
Biggest Strength: Philip Rivers
Year after year, he proves that having a franchise quarterback can cover up so much of a teams’ problems. Still, Philip Rivers is running out of magic. He’ll be 35-years old this season, which sits at the typical tail end of a quarterbacks’ prime years. There’s no reason to think he can put together one more Pro Bowl year. This of course assuming his offensive line can actually block.
Biggest Weakness: Offensive Line
Not much has changed up front for the Chargers, which is mind-boggling given the defenses they’ll face in the AFC West alone this year. The only new starter on their front is 30-year old veteran Matt Slauson, who takes over at center. They still look quite shaky at tackle with King Dunlap and Joe Barksdale. Forget about protecting Rivers, something they haven’t done consistently at all. What about getting Melvin Gordon going on the ground? It’s hard to think a new year with so little change will make a big difference.
Final Record Reason
Adding Joey Bosa to the front should help their pass rush but outside of him the San Diego Chargers really aren’t that different of a team from last year. Don’t forget they lost Eric Weddle in the secondary and feature a bunch of good-not-great options at wide receiver. It’s hard to get excited about this team, and that’s a problem.
