Former Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy is learning first hand how much reputation matters in the modern NFL.

The stigma he continues to hold for being accused of beating his ex-girlfriend and also being an off-the-field distraction have finally begun to catch up with him.  Despite being 27-years old and posting six sacks, a forced fumble and an interception in his lone season with Dallas last year, no teams have even come close to offering him a deal.

It doesn’t look like that’s about to change either, not until something happens to convince them he has changed his ways.  That’s why Hardy has gotten the word out he’s putting in more effort than ever to get the medical help he needs.  Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk laid it out.

"“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Hardy’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has sent to all teams detailed information regarding the activities in which Hardy has been engaged in order to identify and cure any and all disorders that may have contributed to past misbehavior, on and/or off the field.Hardy has been evaluated and treated by multiple NFL physicians, with Dr. Heidi Bruty recently documenting the various steps and stages of individual and group counseling, along with other methods. Topics included his anger management, temper management, domestic violence, and evaluation for ADHD. Hardy also is learning more about impulsive decision making, and he is being assessed for personality, mood, learning, and speech disorders.”"

If this feels like an act of desperation, that’s because it is.  Greg Hardy has finally burned out the talent candle he’d been able to lean on to cover up the immature and perhaps even criminal person he’s portrayed himself to be.  Every NFL team has that point of no return when it comes to a player being untouchable and there is a chance he’s crossed it.

That’s a real shame.  There was a time where it looked like Hardy was destined to become one of the best pass rushers in football.  A dominant edge presence teams had to gameplan for.  Now?  He is nowhere close to his 30th birthday and may have to start planning a life after football.

One can only hope he can stick to this new regimen of improving his mental stability.  The odds aren’t in his favor and the NFL can be a rather unforgiving entity when scorned one too many times.
