Leonard Fournette Buys Two NFL Draft Insurance Policies

In recent years we have seen highly-touted college prospects purchase insurance policies to protect themselves in case of injury or draft day slides. In recent  years, we’ve seen Jaylon Smith, Myles Jack, and Jameis Winston take out loss of value policies in order to protect themselves financially should their careers not fall into their desired place.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette is following in their footsteps, as he has reportedly bought two $10 million loss of value insurance policies. One policy covers him if he suffers a career-threatening injury while the other will compensate him if he falls past a certain pick in next springs 2017 NFL Draft.

Leonard Fournette is expected to be the first of many running backs to hear his name called during  the 2017 NFL Draft. The LSU prospect was a concensus All-American last season after racking up over 1,900 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. He finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting, an award he was an early favorite to win prior to a bad stretch late in the season.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith received $700,000 after he fell out of the first round last month due to a severe knee injury suffered in his final college game against Ohio State. He received an additional $100,000 for each spot he fell after the first round. He was shockingly taken 34th overall by Dallas, meaning smith earned approximately $1,000,000 from his insurance policy.

Former Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was expected to be a first round pick prior to suffering a major knee injury. He received $3 million from his loss of value policy.

Leonard Fournette is not expected to receive the whole $20 million from his collective insurance policies, unless he suffers a career-ending injury and goes undrafted.

After going fourth overall in this past draft, running back Ezekiel Elliott recently signed a four year, $24,965,720 deal with the Cowboys.

If Fournette does go down the worst road possible, those insurance policies will certainly cover approximately what a top five pick is worth in the NFL these days.
