NFL Draft: Buckeyes to Set 1st Round Draft Record?
Next: LIVE DRAFT NIGHT TRACKER
College football programs that are elite usually stay that way for a long time. A combination of excellent coaches and a strong recruiting base can generate a long line of NFL caliber talent, even in just one year.
When looking at the 2016 NFL Draft class, the school that jumps out the most is Ohio State. The former National Champions will have multiple first round picks this year, and potentially the most of all time.
Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, Taylor Decker, Eli Apple, Darron Lee are all nearly guaranteed to be first round picks. Fringe players are Vonn Bell, Michael Thomas, Josh Perry, and Braxton Miller.
Has there ever been a draft where nearly 20% of a first round has come out of one program?
Here are first round draft classes
- Miami 2004 6
- Ohio State 2006 5
- Alabama 2011, 2012 4
- Florida State 1997, 2006 4
- Penn State 2003 4
- USC 4
Is it possible Ohio State could break the record tonight? Yes, it is entirely possible. Is it likely, I would say no.
At best, I think the Buckeye’s could tie the record set by Miami in 2004 with six first round picks. If the five presumptive picks go as planned, I can see Vonn Bell slipping in and tying the record. Josh Perry used to be a hot name in the 1st round, but his stock has fallen. Braxton Miller is not expected to be heard of until day two.
Is there any other school close to the record tonight? Alabama looks to have four locked into the first round, with Derrick Henry in the wings hoping a team like Dallas goes back in for him.
Ole Miss is looking at two or three with Laremy Tunsil, Laquon Treadwell, and Robert Nkemdiche.
After that, Florida and Notre Dame float along the line of having multiple picks.
If any one has a chance tonight, it’s the Ohio State Buckeyes.
