Tyvis Powell was a Big Ten honorable mention this past year at safety after starting in all 13 games and leading Ohio State in interceptions (three), and was third on the team in tackles (71 total).

In 2014 he started all 14 games en route to a national championship where he had nine tackles and the game sealing interception. That year he posted 76 tackles and four interceptions.

His freshman season he started five games and played in all 14 and made some big plays including intercepting Michigan’s Devin Gardner on his game winning two-point conversion try. He also got the start in the team’s Orange Bowl game against Clemson.

Powell came to Ohio State out of Bedford High School in Bedford, Ohio. He chose the Buckeyes as a three-star athlete over Michigan State, West Virginia, and others.

Tyvis Powell accepted an invitation to this year’s Senior Bowl despite being a junior because he graduated in three and a half years with his degree in sports industry.

Strengths:

Tyvis Powell has great ball skills as a safety, which led to several interceptions and pass deflections in his career. He comes through in the clutch as he did against Michigan intercepting the go-ahead pass. He has a good vertical to contest jump balls and has the great hands needed.

Good in run support, can hawk down ball carriers. P

lays with range that’s good for challenging deep balls. Good at cutting off routes that cut inside.

Weaknesses:

Despite his good size, he’s not a hard hitter. He ducks his head a lot, can lead to missed tackles and potentially concussions.

Powell won’t attack downhill and waits for runners to come to him instead of attacking.

Lacks the pop to knock runners back, often fall forward for more yards. He also accounted for 13 missed tackles in his final season. He will also tend to lose his man on deep routes when locking in on the quarterback.

Overview:

Tyvis Powell is a big safety with good coverage skills, and excellent ball hawking ability. He had seven interceptions in the last two seasons, and can have an impact on special teams. He’s worth a late round pick, but doesn’t have the physicality most teams want.

He will be a better high coverage safety who isn’t required to stop the run. He won’t be of much use around the box, but his size, athleticism, and ball skills will earn him a shot.
