While some prospects register at certain positions throughout the entire pre-draft process, that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how they’ll get into the league. Such is the case with Kansas State cornerback Morgan Burns. He’s played several positions throughout his high school and collegiate career, but is more than likely not going to play the one he is more recently accustomed. Does this mean he can still succeed in the NFL?

Strengths

A former high school sprinting champion, Morgan Burns has incredible speed, evidenced by his 4.38 40-yard-dash time at his pro day. Most of the eye-popping tape will come from his ability as a kick returner, as he returned four kicks for touchdowns in 2015. A former running back, Burns has a powerful lower half and knows how to use it. He understands kick returns and does a nice job diagnosing coverages, finding the soft spots and utilizing his speed to get through them. Has tremendous burst, allowing him to blast through the hole once he sees it. Can get creative rather than just sprinting downhill. May have some strong value as a running back, due to his burst and vision, despite technically being a cornerback.

Weaknesses

Does not possess the traits of a cornerback at the next level. His frame is very squatty and he possesses a lot of his ability in his lower half. Plays with stiff hips and lacks the flexibility to consistently mirror receivers in coverage. An inability to break away from blocks was evident all over his tape, despite having the obvious strength and power to break free. Way too many missed tackles for a cornerback. May not be anything more than a fifth cornerback on defense.

Final Thoughts

Morgan Burns is not your typical defensive back prospect, as teams will probably find more value in his ability as a kick returner and potential running back. He possesses powerful legs and a mean stiff arm, allowing to continue to push for yardage. His burst, vision, and outstanding speed should push him into immediate contention for a starting kick returner. His lack of coverage ability will prevent him from making much of an impact in the secondary. Some teams value his speed, which could push his draft stock higher than his tape will signal.
