Montana State tight end Beau Sandland travelled a pretty lengthy journey to get where he is today. After being declared academically ineligible for scholarships, Sandland followed the JUCO route and played two seasons at Pierce College before eventually becoming the top JUCO tight end. Despite numerous offers including Nebraska and Oklahoma, Sandland committed to Miami. He played there for one season before a lack of playing time pushed him to FCS-level Montana State where, in his senior season, he led the team with nine touchdown receptions. Will his road continue through to the NFL? Let’s take a look…
Measurables
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 255 lbs
Class: Senior
Strengths
Beau Sandland is definitely one of the better athletes in this class at the position entering the draft. He shows good acceleration in and out of his routes and shows effort in his running. Displays strong hands and sports a big frame. Isn’t afraid to work the middle of the field and doesn’t shy away from contact. Has a nastiness about him when the ball is in his hands, fighting off tackles and driving forward. Is physical at the point of attack and does a nice job holding his blocks.
Weaknesses
While he demonstrates good acceleration, hasn’t mastered route-running as he typically sticks at the same speed the whole route. Will need to improve his footwork, especially when trying to gain separation from defenders. Needs to learn how to drive in blocks, often relying too much on upper body strength. Lack of production for a gifted athlete and only one year of starting experience, notably coming from the FCS-level.
Final Thoughts
Beau Sandland has received comparisons to Kyle Rudolph and while he isn’t at that level yet, has all the physical tools worth developing. Sandland has the potential to be a dynamic threat in an offense, but a coaching staff will need to be patient as he improves his ability as a route-runner and run-blocker. If he can figure those things out, he has the potential to start.
