Mike Hilton, CB, Ole Miss: 2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report
2016 NFL Draft: Mike Hilton was a versatile defensive back for the Ole Miss defense over the course of his career. In his four years at the university, Hilton established himself at every defensive back position.
Hilton was a candidate for the Jim Thorpe award and earned second team All-SEC honors as a senior in 2015 while also being named the most valuable senior by the Jackson Football Club. He’s been a strong part of the secondary and looks to continue his versatile career at the NFL level.
Name: Mike Hilton
Position: CB
School: Mississippi
Height: 5’8
Weight: 185
2015 Season Stats: 70 tackles (12.5 for loss), 15 passes defended, 2 interceptions
Strengths
While Hilton may not have ideal size, he possesses the type of knowledge you’re looking for in a defensive back. It’s not very often that you get a player that has experience at every position in the secondary and has even stepped up in the box a few times. Hilton accounted for nearly 50 tackles that were unassisted and he’s knowledgeable of opposing offenses with his 12.5 tackles for loss.
He hasn’t been gifted with impressive physical traits but his cerebral knowledge of the game of football is outstanding and it’s a wonder why he hasn’t received nearly as much attention as his production would call for.
Weaknesses
His height and weight will be major concerns for teams as being 5’8 is still considered small even for the nickel back position. To be completely honest, that’s the only cause for why Hilton would even be this far out of consideration.
Outlook
If you like Jim Leonhard then Mike Hilton may be the second coming of him. It’s possible he gets drafted but wouldn’t be surprising if he didn’t. His versatility as a safety and corner back will allow him to find a place on somebody’s football team this off season. He very well could be the most sought after UDFA once the draft ends and looks like a player who can be a solid contributor across the board for many years in the NFL.
