In the later rounds of the NFL Draft, you’re looking to get lucky at times. Depending on your roll of the dice, you can come away with an Antonio Brown (2010, 6th), a Jason McCourty (2009, 6th), a Pierre Garcon (2008, 6th), or even an Orlando Scandrick (2008, 5th). Rewinding back to the 2015 draft, players such as Bills RB Karlos Williams & Raiders LB Ben Heeney were just a couple of names that were taken in the later rounds that produced.

For Arizona State defensive back Lloyd Carrington, hearing his name called in the later rounds of this year’s NFL Draft would be a success on it’s own. Carrington didn’t play football until his senior year of high school so of course he got delayed start on the sport itself. With only a handful of years of football under his belt, Carrington still has the skill set to garner a late round consideration for a team in search for a raw but developmental prospect. Here is the scouting report of the former Sun Devil:

CB Lloyd Carrington, Arizona State

Height: 5’10

Weight: 190 lbs

Strengths:

  • 2014 All- Pac-12 Honorable Mention with 59 tackles, six tackles for loss, one INT, five pass breakups, 3 sacks
  • Aggressive, gritty corner despite smallish NFL frame
  • Good footwork which is aided by his basketball background
  • Special teams experience as a gunner
  • Solid instincts to fit in a zone scheme
  • 2015 stat line of 53 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, six pass breakups

Weaknesses:

  • As raw of a prospect as you can imagine
  • Hasn’t developed the technique of playing the ball while in coverage
  • Tendency to be grabby and a little “handsy” in coverage
  • According to Real Football Network, allowed 522 yards and four touchdowns to WRs w/ height of 6’0 – 6’3 in 2015
  • Allowed a touchdown in each of the last five games in 2015

Bottom line: Carrington is really raw as a prospect. That is plainly obvious. With only roughly five years worth of football experience, the drafting of Carrington will more than likely be for an organization looking to draft a prospect to mold and possibly strike gold. Carrington has solid size, admirable tackling ability and enough potential for a team to take a chance on. A late day three selection is the ceiling for Carrington but he may be more suited for practice squad duty for a season or two.
