2016 NFL Draft: Scouting report for South Carolina State’s explosive defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who had an excellent week at the EW Shrine Game

How will Javon Hargrave’s game translate to the NFL? He may be short, but he’s quick and strong, and can wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines. Will his level of competition be a factor moving forward?

In The NFL

This guy was a really interesting study. I love watching pass rushers, and from the interior, it doesn’t get much more dominant than this. Of course, Hargrave wasn’t playing the highest level of competition, but he could have been, and he would have still been good.

When you watch him play, his sub 5.00 speed and quickness is in play at all times. A defensive line coach in the NFL is going to be giddy to get a chance to coach this kid because he’s got the ability to get upfield in a hurry and in a way, reminds me of Mike Daniels when he was at Iowa. Daniels has, of course, developed into a premiere pass rusher in the NFL from the interior, and just a great player in general.

Hargrave still has a long way to go, but I see some of that in him.

The potential with this guy is really high. He shows an ability to win not only with power and quickness, but when he uses his repertoire of moves and hand pop, he’s just as good. He’s not without flaw, however. I think as much as he does with his quickness and power, he doesn’t seem to be really an ‘anchor’ against the run. He’d sooner make a play in the backfield than he would try and take on a double team and just move a pile into the running back’s way.

There’s a lot he can do, but in the NFL, he’s capable of much more. With his athleticism and explosiveness, natural pass rush ability, and the way he has shown he can dominate against lesser competition, I think he’d be a good flier on day two but a home run pick on day 3.
