Michael Caputo had a productive Junior season for the Badgers, compiling 106 tackles in 2014 including 15 against LSU in the opener. In addition, he added four fumble recoveries and six tackles for loss. He wasn’t able to match that same production in 2016 however, finishing with just 65 tackles, one for loss, and one fumble recovery. Will the dropoff in production scare teams away or will his tape tell a different story?

Strengths

Michael Caputo is a physical safety who makes a living playing near the line of scrimmage and attacking ball-handlers. Shows tenacity and aggressiveness when tackling both wide receivers and running backs. Is not afraid to stick his nose in the middle of the action, always finding a way to be around the ball. Is a tough and well-respected leader, who shows it in his play on the field as well. Has a quick reaction and above-average response time. Has high football character and was seen as a go-to guy in the locker room. Will be a favorite among coaches for his work-ethic and motivation.

Weaknessess

While was asked to cover receivers alone, lacks the speed needed to do so at the next level. Was often too easily forced out of position by quicker, twitchier receivers who could get him caught up in his feet. Needs to improve tackling technique, as he too often goes for the legs. Is too inconsistent with his angles and could find himself behind the play due to lack of recovery speed. Is almost strictly limited to special teams if he is going to make it on an NFL roster.

Final Thoughts

Michael Caputo, from a character standpoint, is every coaches dream. Combine that with his physical, tenacious style of play and hustle to always be around the ball and he would appear to be an intriguing talent among scouts. However, is lack of speed and possible liability in coverage bring more questions than answers. He will have to rely on his toughness, leadership, and hustle to get a chance in camp early as a special teams contributor.
