Oakland Raiders: Top 20 Draft Picks In Franchise History
By Erik Lambert
#19: Rod Martin (317th overall, 1977)
Never mind the fact that the Raiders selected Rod Martin with a pick that doesn’t exist anymore, most will assume that he’s on this list for the sole reason of the epic performance he put on in Super Bowl XV. Facing the Philadelphia Eagles in a game no one expected Oakland to play in, Martin stole the show by intercepting quarterback Ron Jaworski three times. Those turnovers helped his team turn the game into a decisive 27-10 rout.
What many forget is that Martin had a great career after that game. He would go on to claim 12 of his 17 career interceptions in the following seasons and reached back-to-back Pro Bowls in 1983 and 1984 while helping seal another runaway championship victory in Super Bow XVIII. It was just further proof that it’s never a wise idea to take even the picks in the latest rounds for granted because one can never predict when they might produce a gem like him.
