Oakland Raiders: Top 20 Draft Picks In Franchise History
By Erik Lambert
#2: Howie Long (48th overall, 1981)
One of the strongest, most intimidating pass rushers of his generation. Howie Long was a dominant presence for over a decade on the Raiders defensive line. While his 84 career sacks and 13 years of service with the franchise are impressive enough, that doesn’t cover all that he did. He became a great all-around player, showing just as much effort and savvy in run defense as he did attacking the quarterback.
An eight-time Pro Bowler, he helped the Raiders win their one and only Super Bowl championship after moving from Oakland to Los Angeles in 1983, part of one of the most fearsome fronts in NFL history. His play carried him into the Hall of Fame in 2000, just his second year of eligibility. Since then he has made two more excellent contributions to the game in form of sons Chris and Kyle, who have become great players in their own rights.
