Oakland Raiders: Top 20 Draft Picks In Franchise History
By Erik Lambert
#6: Marcus Allen (10th overall, 1982)
Al Davis gave a lot of reason for fans in Oakland to hate him during an otherwise glorious career as owner of the Raiders. Not only did he take the team away from the city for much of the 1980s and 90s, he also jilted many of them by his treatment of running back Marcus Allen. Despite being the catalyst to helping the franchise secure its third Super Bowl title in 1983 as one of the most complete football players in the game, Davis’ stubborn refusal to accept an offense built around a running back led to personality clashes.
It didn’t matter if he was productive and a great teammate and leader, the rivalry grew to a point where Allen saw less and less playing time until he was forced to switch to fullback just to get on the field. Only after he left the Raiders and joined the arch nemesis Kansas City Chiefs did Allen have his say as to what his former team refused to use. He reached his sixth Pro Bowl and helped the Chiefs to an AFC championship appearance. Four of the five seasons he would spend there resulted in over 1,000 yards from scrimmage.
