Dallas Cowboys: Is Paxton Lynch a legitimate option for the Cowboys with the 4th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft?

Losing Tony Romo has proven more than detrimental for the Dallas Cowboys over the years. This past season, it proved to be the worst thing that could possibly happen, and the Cowboys wound up with the 4th overall pick in the draft as a result of their QB situation.

Romo might not be an ‘elite’ quarterback but he’s a major difference maker on the Cowboys (obviously) so why wouldn’t they be on the lookout for a replacement? Romo played at a near-MVP level in 2014 with 34 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, but played in just four games a year ago and hasn’t played a full 16 game slate since the 2012 season.

It’s no wonder the Cowboys are doing their due diligence on quarterbacks in this draft, and they may have their eye on one in particular: Memphis’ Paxton Lynch.

Lynch, who is regarded as some to be the top QB prospect in this year’s draft, boasts an exciting blend of size, a strong arm, and huge upside which we all saw on display this past year.

If the Cowboys are just putting on a show, it’s a darn good one.

Lynch has been compared to Marcus Mariota by Lance Zierlein, which is a lofty comparison considering how much faster Mariota is than Lynch, and the level at which he played for three more years than Lynch.

I don’t see the comparison, but it’s easy to see why the Cowboys are interested in Lynch. Physically, every tool is there. He’s developed into a great passer and we saw that this is a player capable of playing right away in the NFL, but he’d be allowed to sit and learn behind Tony Romo and play if or when he gets hurt.

If the Cowboys miss out on Jalen Ramsey, I see no reason why they shouldn’t take a shot on their QB of the future. Romo is going to be 36 in April, and has a long history of injury issues, specifically now with his collarbone. I would think the Cowboys’ interest in Lynch has to be in the first round, whether with the 4th overall pick or by trading back into the round later on.

He’s not getting past the Denver Broncos, if John Elway has anything to say about it.
