When you hear the name “University of Wisconsin”, what do you think of? Gritty football players who may not have the “elite” talent of other programs but they play hard and will always play with a chip on their shoulder. The most known Badger to this day (JJ Watt) wasn’t highly coveted coming out of high school yet he is a top-five player overall in the NFL presently.

Linebacker Joe Schobert is a prospect in the upcoming draft that has “middle-of-the-pack” talent but he also has enough intrigue that some NFL draft circles want to know what he brings to the table as a prospect. Let’s take a look.

More from Scouting Reports

Joe Schobert

Height: 6’1

Weight: 244 lbs

Strengths: Schobert has been a source of production for the Badgers the past two seasons….Totaled 130 total tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, six forced fumbles, seven pass deflections in the 2014 & 2015 combined…..Consistent hand usage when engage blockers….A solid tackler overall….Provided versatility as an outside linebacker and edge rusher, while also displayed the ability to be useful in pass coverage…..Applies sound technique to engage blockers but maintain sight of football….Will more than likely be a strong-side linebacker at the next level….NFL-type size at over 240 lbs….Shown ability to show some bend on the edge when rushing the passer at times…..Provides value as a special teamer.

Weaknesses: “Looks” the part but it’s clear he needs to upgrade his overall strength….Not known as an athletic marvel and may never be….Doesn’t have the quick burst at the snap……Lack of NFL strength will be an issue when dealing with offensive tackles in the 320+ pound range…..Read-and-react skills needs polish….Seems to have limitations as a player overall.

Bottom line: Schobert produced at Wisconsin and his last two seasons can’t be ignored. However, with that production, Schobert has some noticeable deficiencies that will prevent him from getting drafted until the day three more than likely.

Depending on the team and their defensive scheme, Schobert has enough traits to be molded into a situational pass rusher or provide depth at the linebacker position while also adding quality to a special teams unit.
