They came close to the playoffs in 2015. So painfully close. Now the New York Jets understand if they wish to make the final push into January they have to backload their veteran roster with a good draft of young talent that can provide depth and fill in key positions where they’re weak. Such things are never easy to pull off when picking in the bottom half of every round, but it could change everything were they make it happen.

Does their latest mock reflect such a success?

1st Round

QB. Memphis. Paxton Lynch . 20. player. 30. Todd Bowles did the right thing leaning on Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2015. He was the right quarterback at the right time for a team in transition. Now he must do the right thing again and move on from the 33-year old. It’s clear he’s going to force the Jets to overpay for him, and he’s not that great a quarterback to begin with. The time is right for this team to look to the future.
If they don’t believe if Geno Smith or Bryce Petty, then grabbing a quarterback in the 1st round is their best hand to play. Paxton Lynch may not be quite at the level of Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, but it isn’t because of talent. The Memphis product is 6’7″ with a strong enough arm to make any throw and plenty of mobility. He seems confident on the field and can elevate players around him. The questions are his lack of pro-style offense experience, iffy injury history and an “aloof” personality. How much of that is true during draft rumor season is unknown. What is known is Lynch has the talent to be a good starter in the NFL, and New York needs one.
