Jared Goff and Carson Wentz: Pro-Ready Vs. Upside
By Erik Lambert
Kerry Collins vs. Steve McNair
The 1995 draft featured two expansion teams in Carolina and Jacksonville with another team in the Oilers that was moving to Tennessee. The Panthers wanted a quarterback and were trying to decide between two very different prospect. Kerry Collins was a polished passer from Penn State who had just completed an undefeated season with a Rose Bowl victory. Steve McNair was a physical marvel out of tiny Alcorn State who ran like a running back and could throw the ball farther than anybody.
The Result:
It was a unique situation for both players. Collin played well to start his career in Carolina, leading them to the NFC championship in just his second season. Then things fell apart. He ended up with the New York Giants, led them to the Super Bowl and was gone after four seasons. There was a brief stint in Oakland before, ironically, he ended up with McNair’s team in Tennessee where he went to his second Pro Bowl. In total he played for six teams in his career, leading three to the playoffs.
McNair didn’t play when he first got to the Oilers, but eventually did. After a slow start he emerged as one of their biggest playmakers, leading them to the Super Bowl in 1999. From there he became a three-time Pro Bowler and won MVP honors in 2003. Three seasons later he was released and ended up with the Baltimore Ravens, leading them to a playoff appearance in 2006.
