Jared Goff and Carson Wentz: Pro-Ready Vs. Upside
By Erik Lambert
Tim Couch vs. Donovan McNabb
There was no doubt that Tim Couch looked like he was right out of central casting in 1999. The Kentucky quarterback was 6’4″ with plenty of arm who had thrown 75 touchdown passes in his final two years of college. Donovan McNabb was a late-riser out of less-heralded Syracuse. He could throw the ball well but was better known for his impressive mobility (three-straight years of 400+ rushing yards).
Couch was the golden boy pick of Cleveland at #1 overall while McNabb was mercilessly booed by Philadelphia fans when the Eagles took him at #5.
The Result:
Things never seemed to take off for Couch in Cleveland. He struggled with consistency, wasn’t surrounded by the best talent or coaching, and then was hampered by injuries that eventually forced him to retire early. McNabb became a hero in Philadelphia, leading them to five NFC championships and a Super Bowl appearance while reaching six Pro Bowls.
