Rewards his own

Something general managers always try to do is develop a system that isn’t reliant on free agency.  Instead they’d prefer to develop and retain their own players.  Pace is somebody who made it clear he’ll sign someone to a one-year deal with the promise that if they performed well they’d be rewarded for it.  Veteran cornerback Tracy Porter has become the latest example.

He took what many felt was his last chance to stick on a team by signing a one-year deal worth minimum money.  After some early injury issues, he emerged as a reliable starter in the secondary.  Instead of just thanking him for his services, the Bears did the right thing and handed him a brand new three-year deal.  That sends a message to the other players.

If you play well for us, we’ll take care of you.
