Sean Smith To Sign With The Oakland Raiders
By Erik Lambert
Big cornerback Sean Smith was bound to have a strong market if he decided to leave the Kansas City Chiefs, and that proved true as he’s found a new team after a hot bidding war. Sensing something building, he decided to join the Oakland Raiders.
For those unfamiliar with what Smith brings to the table, here is an overview.
"“Sean Smith is probably the largest cornerback not named Brandon Browner in the NFL. At 6’3 218 pounds he has the size and length to play a multitude of positions. Cornerback has been his calling and he hasn’t disappointed in his seven years in the league. In his last three years with the Chiefs, Smith as accounted for 5 interceptions and 46 passes defended. While he isn’t the shutdown corner that the Chiefs had hoped for, he is still a solid cornerback that can contribute moving forward.”"
Jack Del Rio and Ken Norton Jr. are two defensive coaching minds who share a similar philosophy: a love for bigger, longer corners. Norton saw in Seattle with Richard Sherman and Del Rio employed it in Denver with Aqib Talib. So Smith is the exact kind of corner that fits what they want to do. Never mind the fact he is solid in man coverage and fills perhaps the biggest need on their team.
GRADE: A
It’s clear the Raiders are going after it this year. Smith is another big piece they’ve added to the puzzle. Given the money being shelled out for corners, it’s a high price to pay but one they had to if they wish to win now. So in that context, with their young core in place, this was a good move on their part. Smith is used to playing in the AFC West, so it’s not like the adjustment will be a big one.
