One of the fastest and most intriguing wide receivers to hit NFL free agency was Travis Benjamin.  After initial belief he might return to the Cleveland Browns, word has leaked that the young pass target has a new home in mind.

This is who the Chargers and the city will be getting as a player.

"“Benjamin was one of the focal points of the putrid Browns’ offense in 2015. He pulled in 68 catches for 966 yards and five touchdowns. He is a big-play receiver with blazing speed, making plays of 69 and 61 yards in his career. In addition to wide receiver, Benjamin is dangerous on special teams. He has returned three punts for touchdowns in his four NFL seasons and once took a kickoff back 86 yards. At age 26, Benjamin still has a lot of upside.”"

Head coach Mike McCoy knew his offense needed more speed at wide receiver for quarterback Philip Rivers and they accomplished that goal.  Benjamin will join with Keenan Allen and Steve Johnson to form a capable trio of weapons for the veteran Pro Bowler, provided they are all able to stay healthy.

GRADE:  A-

Benjamin has had what amounts to one good season in his NFL career, so there is a bit of risk the Chargers taking on him.  Still, if he plays the same way he did in Cleveland with their quarterback mess for somebody like Rivers, it could turn into one of the smarter moves made by any free agent this year.
