San Diego Chargers Sign DL Brandon Mebane

The San Diego Chargers defensive line was horrid last season and they desperately needed to find some help. They finally found their answer today in free agency.

According to multiple reports, former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane is being signed by the San Diego Chargers to a three year deal.

Mebane had 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks last year for the Seahawks. Drafted in the third round back in 2007, Mebane has started 125 out of 131 games for the Seahawks. While he missed time with a hamstring injury, he was a solid run blocker for most of his time in Seattle.

Mebane should help a Chargers defensive line that allowed over 2,000 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground last year.

Here is what NFL Mocks writer Kyle McKinnon had to say about Brandon Mebane heading into free agency this week.

"His return from a torn hamstring suffered the year prior was a success, but Brandon Mebane looked to have lost a step in the process. A largely overlooked and underrated player, Mebane has been a disruptive force from the interior over the course of his nine-year career with the Seahawks. He’s absolutely wrecked offensive game plans and was an integral piece in Seattle’s historic defensive run in 2013. His play that year seems like a distant memory, though, after his pedestrian 2015 campaign. Mebane is a quality pickup for depth reasons, but could potentially end up being a big-time steal."

The Chargers also signed tight end Antonio Gates to a two year contract, which should allow the veteran to retire with the team that took a chance on him after going undrafted.

Ladarius Green however is expected to be signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost Heath Miller to retirement after this year.
