Man alive, that’s a lot of green for Fleener.
He’s had at least 50 receptions in each of the last three seasons, including an eight touchdown campaign in 2014 when Luck was fully healthy. Certainly one of the better receivers in the NFL at the TE position, Fleener is a big bodied target that will give the Saints a very talented, young replacement for Ben Watson, who is now in Baltimore.
Fleener doesn’t strike me as much the blocking type of tight end, but he doesn’t really have to be. He’s a dynamic threat at 6-6 who can run incredibly well for his size.
There have certainly been plenty of gaffes on the field for Fleener, but he’s a good player. Is he worth what the Saints are now paying him? That’s a tough call to make, but with Jimmy Graham traded last year, the Saints decided to give their big money to this guy instead.
The Colts knew they stood the risk of losing Fleener when they re-signed Dwayne Allen to big money, and that turned out to be the case. Fleener will give the Saints and Drew Brees the security blanket he covets down the middle of the field and in the red zone, and should be a high priority player for all of us fantasy football guys.
