Mitchell Schwartz To Sign With Kansas City Chiefs
By Erik Lambert
Mitchell Schwartz may not be a household name to fans, but he’s one of the better right tackles available in free agency and now he has a new home. Eager for offensive line help, the Kansas City Chiefs made him their first big signing of the off-season.
This is the player the Chiefs signed and what he can do for them.
"“Having started 64 straight games since being drafted in 2012, Mitchell Schwartz has been a consistent cornerstone for the Cleveland Browns offensive line. Last season Schwartz was one of the few bright spots on the Browns offensive side of the ball, only allowing three sacks and eight quarterback hurries all season. At only 26 years of age he is just now entering the prime of his career, and with the importance of right tackles in today’s NFL Schwartz will be a hot commodity.”"
He may not be at the level of a Joe Thomas but Schwartz is entering the prime of his career and is settled in as a solid pass protector. That is what the Chiefs need in their system after Alex Smith endured 45 sacks during the regular season in 2015. It grants them flexibility after losing Donald Stephenson.
GRADE: B
Being able to lock up a quality offensive lineman in his prime on a long deal is something the Chiefs have needed to do given how many capable bodies they’ve lost the past few season. Schwartz will lock down their right tackle spot and given them flexibility along the rest of the offensive line. It’s a good deal for the team and for him.
