Ian Williams To Re-Sign With San Francisco 49ers
By Erik Lambert
Ian Williams had emerged has one of the best interior nose tackles in the NFL last season. The San Francisco 49ers clearly recognized that value and didn’t waste time making sure he stayed right where he is.
Here is a review of the player San Francisco is getting back and what he brings.
"“Williams brings just average measurables for a defensive tackle, particularly a nose tackle. At just 6’1, 305 lbs he isn’t going to physically dominate anyone. However, Williams is the kind of guy you want in your locker room. He signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and worked his way into the lineup. San Francisco was so impressed with him that they brought him back on a contract extension in 2013. Last year Williams was named a defensive captain by head coach Jim Tomsula, who served as the team’s defensive line over the entire course of William’s career. He is still only 26 years old and will bring instant leadership and toughness to whatever team brings him in.”"
He may not fit the true mold in terms of size, but the guy blends a mix of quickness and power that enables him to affect games like the best can. He’s difficult to move in the run game and boasts active hands and natural leverage that enables him to squeeze the pocket as an interior pass rusher.
GRADE: A
This is a deal the 49ers needed to make. Williams was the biggest in-house free agent they had. Keeping him was critical to ensuring the stability and future success of their defense. The next step is continuing to add pieces around him and other key players like NaVorro Bowman and Arik Armstead.
