George Iloka To Re-Sign With Cincinnati Bengals
By Erik Lambert
Good safeties are a prime commodity in the NFL, so they’re bound to draw tons of interest in free agency. George Iloka topped the lists of most teams, but only one was going to emerge victorious. That would be the one who drafted him as the Cincinnati Bengals were able to prevent him from leaving the back end of their defense.
This is what Iloka should be able to bring with him.
"“After spending four seasons with the Bengals, one of the biggest safeties in football is looking for a new home. At 6-4, 225 pounds, the physical Boise State grad does a great job roaming the back end of defenses. Last season, he started all 12 games he played in. Over his career, Iloka has 181 tackles and four interceptions but his best trait is his ability to fit multiple roles. His size allows him to play “in the box” as well as in coverage.”"
Scheme fit isn’t a problem here since Iloka made a name for himself playing with the Bengals in the first place. He’ll return to doing what he does best for them and the coaches can look to fill in the gaps in the secondary around him moving forward.
GRADE: A
Many will say Marvin Jones was a bigger priority, but that’s not true. George Iloka is a major key piece to their defense and far more important to its success than Jones was to the offense. Retaining him on this contract is a win for the organization and a price well worth paying.
