Danny Trevathan Will Sign With Chicago Bears
By Erik Lambert
Considered the best inside linebacker in 2016 NFL free agency, Danny Trevathan has chosen to sign with the Chicago Bears and rejoin his former head coach John Fox. He’ll be playing under Vic Fangio in that 3-4 defense they’re trying to build.
Here is an update on what they will be getting from the 26-year old.
"“One of the more gifted linebackers in this free agency class, Danny Trevathan could be looking for a big payday from a team looking to bolster its front seven. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 draft by the Broncos, Trevathan has proven to be quite a steal. He recovered two fumbles in Super Bowl 50, helping seal the Broncos victory.”"
This is an important get for the Bears defense. They were routinely trounced in coverage by opposing tight ends last season. Trevathan’s ability to play the pass with his speed and physicality will be a huge help with that. Never mind his tackling prowess and awareness against the run.
GRADE: A
It may not feel like a superstar signing to some, but given the modest money by comparison to other free agents out there and what Trevathan can do, this is a quality signing without breaking the bank for young GM Ryan Pace. Chances are he gave his defense a boost with loads of room to do much more.
