Brock Osweiler To Sign With Houston Texans
By Erik Lambert
Brock Osweiler was by far the most sought after quarterback expected to hit NFL free agency this year. Seems he found the team he wants to go forward with. The Houston Texans, desperate for a quarterback after the Brian Hoyer debacle, made it happen by stealing him from Denver.
Here is a rundown of who they will be getting in terms of the player and person.
"“Brock, Brock, Brock…The former second round pick out of Arizona State has played pretty well in limited opportunities for the Broncos over the last four years, but there are still plenty of questions. Is he worth the kind of contract he is getting? Only time will tell, but teams need quarterbacks and there’s no question that this is one of the best ones available on the market. Osweiler is constantly mentioned for his height, but not a lot of people talk about his strong arm, mobility, and leadership. This is a quality human being as well as a player with the kind of tools coaches like to work with at the QB position. Is he capable of being a star? You’d hope so at his price tag.”"
Bill O’Brien is a classic type of offensive-minded coach and Osweiler is much his type of quarterback: big, can stand tall in the pocket, has a rifle arm that can go deep but still enough mobility to keep plays alive. He’ll know exactly how to use him and the Texans should view this as a significant upgrade in talent.
GRADE: B
While Osweiler is certainly a step up from Hoyer, it probably took a ton of money in order for the Texans to pry him away. He did go 5-2 as a starter, but it’s important to remember Brock was also benched late in the season for not playing well enough to keep a fading Peyton Manning on the bench. So the talent gets a good grade, but the money is too much.
