One of the greatest tight ends in NFL history will reportedly be staying with his long-time team.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, veteran tight end Antonio Gates will agree to a two year contract with the San Diego Chargers.

Antonio Gates was signed by the Chargers out of Kent State in 2003 after he went undrafted. Since then, he has been to eight Pro Bowls and has become one of the greatest San Diego Chargers of all-time.

He is the San Diego Chargers franchise all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

He finished last year with 630 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Here’s what NFL Mock’s writer Kyle McKinnon said about Antonio Gates going into free agency this week.

"One of the most prolific pass-catchers the NFL has ever seen, Antonio Gates will be one highly sought after free agent. Gates is just the second tight end ever to eclipse the century mark in touchdown grabs and has over 10,000-yards receiving over the course of his 13-year career. He’s been the model of consistency since he entered the league in 2003 and that hasn’t changed even into older age. Despite missing five games due to suspension and injury, Gates still managed to reel in 56 receptions, finding the end zone on five of those catches. A tremendous red zone target and chain-mover, any team would be happy to have the veteran tight end aboard."

Despite injuries and age, the Chargers decided to stick with their guy. Ladarius Green is also a free agent, but his future is now a bit undecided with Antonio Gate’s new two year contract.

With a two year deal, expect Gates to ultimately retire a Charger as one of the greatest receiving tight ends of all-time.
