Doug Martin To Re-Sign With Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The running back market for 2016 NFL free agency is one of the strongest in recent memory, and Doug Martin sits at the top.  It didn’t take long for a suitor to come calling.  Turns out that suitor is the team that drafted him as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted to make sure he didn’t play anywhere else.

Here is a rundown of who they’re getting back as a player.

"“One of the best running backs set to hit the open market.  Doug Martin is entering the prime of his career and has now validated his status as a Pro Bowler after another excellent season in Tampa Bay (1,402 yards and six TDs).  He should be a fit for any system, boasting the kind of versatile skill set most workhorse backs require.  His vision, toughness and ability to shed tackles either with strength or elusiveness is why the Bucs weren’t anxious to lose him.  Any offense that adds him gets a player that can carry the load when asked.”"

Martin thrived in the scheme devised by offensive coordinator (now head coach) Dirk Koetter.  Jameis Winston fed off the balance he was able to create, opening up easier opportunities in the passing game.  There is no reason to think any of that will change with Martin being 27 and in his prime.  Health permitting he should have some good seasons ahead of him, especially if Winston improves as many predict.  It comes down to how Koetter may or may not change in his new position.

GRADE:  A

It’s a good deal for both sides.  Martin gets a good payday and remains in an offense he knows he can succeed in.  Tampa Bay retains a key cog to their success on that side of the ball and can place their draft focus at other positions, which would’ve changed had he gone elsewhere.
