Nile Lawrence-Stample, DT, Florida State: 2016 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Nile Lawrence-Stample probably isn’t a name most have heard of outside Tallahassee. Given his height and weight, Stample is a tank on the FSU defensive line. The Nova High School product first made is way onto the scene in 2012 when he produced four tackles against Boston College as a redshirt freshman.

His role became more prominent in the 2013 season where he earned six starts for the nations top defense and eventual National Champions.
During the 2013 season, Stample recorded 15 tackles with 1.5 tackles for a loss. Expecting to grow from the previous season, Stample was affected by a pectoral injury that kept him sidelined for most of the 2014 season. Still, with his own determination managed to play in four games, starting in two, and recorded 10 tackles as well as a blocked extra point.
In 2015 he finally was able to get the opportunity that he was looking for. He set career highs in every major category with 36 tackles, 3.5 for loss and his 2.5 sacks. Stample will have to prove that he’s fully recovered from his pectoral injury and build on his progression that he’s shown since his freshman year.
Position: DT
Height: 6’1
Weight: 313
2015 Season Stats: 36 tackles (3.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks
Strengths
Stample isn’t the tallest defensive tackle but it gives him leverage against the opposing offensive line. He’s a big boy who plays like it, he isn’t the first person in the backfield but he does a great job plugging up the holes and forcing runners to reroute their direction.
At times Stample looks like the dominant player that he could have been before injury. Coming back from injury is tough and it slows progression, especially for a 20-21 year old athlete. Stample could very well benefit from being in an NFL weight room and becoming a gem on somebody’s roster.

Weaknesses
There isn’t a lot of tape on Stample. He earned first team All-ACC honors from the coaches but there isn’t a lot to go off of. In his entire career he has started 20 games but 12 of those came in 2015 for a career that’s stretched five years. His lack of tackles for loss is of concern too, 6.5 over a five year period is low and while he can plug the hole at times there’s questions as to if he can stop the runner entirely.
He was invited to the East-West shrine game and will have an opportunity to showcase his talent at FSU’s pro day, but he’s a relative unknown in this deep defensive line class.
Outlook
Nile Lawrence-Stample more than likely won’t be drafted in 2016. However, he’s shown steady improvement with every opportunity that he’s been given. If he can continue to grow as a player then there is always the chance that he can make an impact in the NFL.
