NFL Draft hot takes: TCU WR Josh Doctson is going to be a superstar, but you probably already knew that…

TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson is going to be a superstar in the NFL, but if you clicked on this post, you probably already knew that or thought that.

If you’re among those who need convincing, stick with me here, and bring a fire extinguisher because these takes are going to be white hot…

Josh Doctson is the best wide receiver in this class not named Treadwell…

But I can’t just tell you that, I have to have some meat on that bone. Doctson has a flair for the impossible, and makes catches at a higher degree of difficulty more frequently than any other receiver I’ve scouted.

There are maybe a couple of receivers — past or present, college or NFL — that I can remember scouting with this kind of ability. So why is Doctson able to do this?

1. Insane body control

2. Length

3. Humongous hands.

Check out his measurables from Mock Draftable:

You’ll notice there aren’t many comparable athletes that have played at a high level for an extended period of time here. I don’t necessarily think that’s surprising at all. Some have compared Doctson to Terrance Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, but he’s far more dynamic than that.

In fact, Doctson’s ability to high point the football and make ridiculous catches is more like Williams’ teammate Dez Bryant than Williams himself.

I’ve also seen the comparison to Odell Beckham Jr. flown out there, and I don’t think that’s far off. Odell was 0.07 faster on his 40-yard dash, and Doctson is a little bit taller and leaner, but these two guys both have an ability to make ridiculous catches look easy, and it all starts with strong hands and body control.

Let me try and stress this next point by putting it in italics…

There is no pass thrown at Josh Doctson that he cannot haul in.

And that will infuriate defensive backs. Worried about his ability (or lack thereof) to defeat press coverage because of bulk? Consider that Odell did just seven reps on the bench press while Doctson did 14. That’s not the only way to measure someone’s ability to beat press coverage, so let’s take a quick look here…

This man is absolutely ridiculous. I’m half-tempted to call him the best receiver in the draft, but Treadwell is pretty darn awesome. I don’t know that there is a receiver as smooth as Doctson in this draft class, and his combination of leaping ability, explosiveness, hands, body control, and timing are all traits that translate really well to the NFL.

Not only that, but I think he’s going to soon become a superstar. His ability to win with a ridiculous catch radius will make him an instant contributor to an NFL offense, but the degree to which he gets involved will be dependent on what situation he’s drafted into. He’s got the ability to be a star early on, and I can’t wait to see what he can do at the next level.

If you want to nit-pick over size, be my guest, but there’s nothing as a receiver that Doctson can’t do, and athletically, he stands up to any defensive back in the NFL. He’s going to be a superstar — just watch.
