The 2013 NFL Draft was the first time Mississippi St. has two cornerbacks drafted inside the top 100 players: Darius Slay to the Lions at #36 and Jonathan Banks to the Buccaneers at #43. In 2016, we see another pair of Bulldog cornerbacks attempting the same feat with Will Redmond and Taveze Calhoun. It appears Will Redmond’s stock is floating right inside that top-100 mark, but where does Taveze Calhoun fit into the mix? Can this duo accomplish the same thing as their predecessors and be a Day 1-2 pick? It really comes down to Calhoun and if he displays the talent and upside necessary to entice a team to spend early for his services.

Height: 6’1″

Weight: 180 lbs

Year: Senior

Strengths

Taveze Calhoun possesses the length and size that most NFL teams covet, considering the current pass-happy nature of the league and the increasing size and speed of wide receivers/tight ends. Has a ton of experience against a wide array of NFL receivers. Is widely known as a high character prospect who demonstrates exceptional intangibles and leadership. A smart football player that relies on timing and quick responsiveness rather than physical traits and rarely gets called for a penalty. An aggressive corner who doesn’t shy away from more physical receivers. Understands how to position himself to make the most of his abilities.

Weaknesses

While Calhoun possesses adequate height for the position, he lacks the ideal strength and thickness. Very thin frame could be cause for concern against bigger, stronger NFL receivers. Not a very strong tackler and lacks proper form, often putting his head down rather than looking where he is lunging. Lacks the deep speed to cover fast receivers, opting to bail his assignments. Shows a lack of balance, both in his back pedal and overall technique, with receivers repositioning with ease. Unsure of where he fits as he lacks the speed to play consistently in man coverage and the strength to play consistently in zone.

Final Thoughts

Taveze Calhoun is the type of player that fans root for. A smart leader with high character both on and off the field who has overcome injuries to help this defense be successful. What he lacks in physical traits he makes up for in mental toughness and maturity. It is more than likely he is a late day 3 pick, if not an undrafted free agent. However, he will have his shot in training camp as he possesses a strong determination to succeed.
