Cleveland Browns On Verge Of Mass Free Agent Exodus
By Erik Lambert
If there is one thing athletes have shown a dislike for in the NFL over the years, it’s constant change. They need a stable situation with continuity of coaching and system in order to succeed at the highest possible level. All things the Cleveland Browns have been unable to accomplish. The franchise is about to enter this season with its fifth head coach since 2010. Even though many applaud the hiring of Hue Jackson for the job, several of the Browns players are unimpressed.
So much in fact that they seem to be maneuvering to leave Cleveland for a fresh start elsewhere as free agents.
Keep in mind these are three high profile players. Alex Mack just reached his third Pro Bowl at center for the Browns. Tashaun Gipson has developed a reputation for being one of the best ball hawking safeties in the NFL. In the past 40 games he has played, he has amassed 13 interceptions including two defensive touchdowns. As for Travis Benjamin, he’s a speedy wide receiver who broke out for 966 yards and five touchdowns in 2015 despite a litany of problems at the quarterback position.
Losing just one such player makes life more difficult for Jackson in his efforts to get this franchise off the mat. Losing three can be crippling. Perhaps there is yet time for deals to be worked out but if they leave as the rumors continue to hint at, the Cleveland may have to continue waiting while this new regime cleans up the debris and destruction left behind by their predecessors.
