In a surprising move, Ole Miss wide receiver Laquon Treadwell announced today that he will not run the 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine. Widely regarded as the best wide receiver prospect in this years draft, Treadwell says he is focusing on his other skills and will run on his pro day.

Check out my instant reaction to Treadwell’s announcement on Periscope below!

As I mentioned in that video, a positive in all of this is that Treadwell is focusing on his route running and hands over running a solid 40 time. While scouts may have to wait another month to see him run the 40 at his pro day, they will still see him in motion for the 3-Cone Drill and Shuttle Run among other workouts for wide receivers.

Treadwell is the first overall wide receiver on by draft board and is currently my only wide receiver listed as a first round lock. I find it hard to see Treadwell slip out of the top 15 of this springs NFL Draft in Chicago and project him to fall somewhere in the top 10. A team such as the Baltimore Ravens at number six overall could be interested in Treadwell, as could the Philadelphia Eagles later at 13.

The receiver out of Ole Miss came back after a gruesome leg injury against Auburn in 2014. He suffered a dislocated ankle and broke his tibia on the goal line and was out for the rest of the Rebel’s 2014 season.

He returned in 2015 to post a career best 1153 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, and 82 receptions to help lead the Rebels to a Sugar Bowl victory over Oklahoma State on New Years Day.

While it may be disappointing to not see Laquon Treadwell run at this years NFL Combine, it shouldn’t hurt his draft stock. If anything, his commitment to working on his football skills is much more productive than building around becoming an Olympic sprinter.
