NFL free agency bargains: Redskins LB Keenan Robinson
NFL Free Agency bargains: Taking a look at a player who could be a free agency bargain in Washington Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson…
NFL Free agency is nearly upon us, and that means that your favorite team is going shopping. One of the great things we love as consumers is a great deal, and in the NFL, it’s no different.
I want to take a look at a number of really good free agency bargains over the coming weeks as we prepare for the new league year to begin, and the player I want to take a look at today is Washington Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson.
The former Texas Longhorns star is going to be 27 in July, and in his three NFL seasons (missed 2013), he has developed into a very intriguing young player at the linebacker position.
At 6-3 and nearly 245 pounds, Robinson is a physical marvel who has struggled at times with consistency in Washington. Part of that has to do with injuries, and part of it has to do with his tackling. In 2014, he enjoyed the best season of his career, playing 13 games and racking up 109 total tackles with 1.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, and an interception.
In 2015, he played in 12 games, he racked up 63 more tackles, another fumble recovery, and another interception.
His athleticism will earn him plenty of looks from other NFL teams, but his injury history and missed tackles are what put him in the bargain bin. If you’re an NFL team searching for linebacker depth and a possible sneaky solid starter in a 3-4 defense, Robinson is a guy who you’re going to get in touch with.
Pectoral injuries, shoulder injuries, rib injuries, and inconsistencies are not going to earn Robinson big numbers on a contract, but I think there’s still a lot of potential here and on his second contract, he can be a really good player. The key is going to be for him to stay healthy, and at this point he hasn’t played a full 16 game season.
I think on a short-term contract, this is a gamble I would take, especially if I was a team that was pretty comfortable with my linebacker depth and thought I might be able to tweak Robinson’s game a little bit to put him in the best position to succeed. We know he has the athleticism to play sideline to sideline and to excel in coverage. The potential is there for him to be a nice bargain on the free agent market.
