Each year, we recognize certain positions that may be deeper than others and the 2016 draft class is no different. While opinions may vary as to which position fits that description this year, the one that sticks out a lot is defensive tackle. There seems to be a lot of talent at the position, meaning teams may very well find instant-impact players well into the third round. One of these players is Maliek Collins out of Nebraska. With the talent to a be a first round pick, he may slip merely because of the depth available. He will have to have a good combine and pro-day if he wishes to see his stock sore.

Strengths

A former football standout and wrestling champion, Collins displays the athletic traits that have scouts drooling. He shows an explosive first step and the balance to out-leverage his opposition. Evident by his wrestling background, he plays with active, aggressive hand movements and shows an impressive spin move. His coordination can make it difficult for opposing lineman to lock their hands on him, as he’s constantly moving around. His athleticism gives him good versatility, allowing to be disruptive all over the line. Still a growing player, Collins flashes the potential for a much higher ceiling.

Weaknesses

While he’s a versatile rusher, he will be very schematically limited to 3-technique in a 4-3 defense. Lacks the base strength to be a true anchor against the run, often opting to simply run ahead. Overly uses athleticism rather than any counter-moves, showing a lack of pass-rushing arsenal. If a lineman does lock on him, he becomes almost irrelevant as he’ll either find himself on the ground or redirected, showing a lack of strength.

Final Thoughts

A surefire 3-technique in the NFL, Collins flashes impressive athleticism and quickness as an interior rusher, but a lack of strength limits his ability to hold up and anchor against the run. Collins will need coaching to build up his pass-rush tool chest and will certainly need to get stronger. However, if a team selects him simply based on his strengths and allows him play up the field, he could be a productive player.
Projection: 2nd-3rd round
