player. 57.
The Bears play the board perfectly here. They move down enough to secure another choice in the top 64 picks but don’t hang back too long to let a potentially elite player slip from their grasp. That is why they sacrifice the fourth-rounder from Houston to move back up and grab Jaylon Smith. From a risk point of view, it’s obvious. The Notre Dame linebacker tore his ACL and LCL in the Fiesta Bowl. There is no guarantee on whether he’ll be the same player he was before the injury.

Still the surgery was a success and when healthy Smith is one of the best at his position in the country. He’s not only big and strong but supremely athletic and fast. He can do anything asked of him on the field from tackling and playing coverage to blitzing the quarterback. Chicago has nobody of that caliber on their defense. That’s why they take the risk.
. OLB. Notre Dame. Jaylon Smith. 18
