Denver Broncos: Quarterback Options For When Manning Retires
By Erik Lambert
It’s almost impossible not to see Peyton Manning riding off into the sunset after claiming his second Super Bowl ring in what has been a Hall of Fame career. While fans are thrilled for him, the Denver Broncos must look to the future. Who will be in line to replace him on that roster?
The answer may not be so simple. Here are five options that might be open to them over the next few months who are worth considering.
Brock Osweiler (Free Agent)
This of course is the first option every Broncos fan is thinking about. Brock Osweiler played well for the most part during his relief appearance in 2015 but it was clear he wasn’t ready for winning big games. The problem is the team can’t afford to franchise tag him because of Von Miller. In other words they have to risk Osweiler hitting the open market and possibly getting a good deal from another team. It will take some serious negotiating to keep him around.
Sam Bradford (Free Agent)
If Osweiler leaves, it could put the Broncos in a serious position. Depending on what John Elway wants to do, they could look for a quick veteran replacement to try to keep their Super Bowl window open. The best option expected to be available in free agency will be Sam Bradford. He’s unlikely to return to the Philadelphia Eagles. Though a bit of a disappointment as a former #1 overall pick, he showed flashes of what he can do last season and finally made it through the year without a major injury.
Robert Griffin III (Free Agent)
This would be a headline-grabber for sure. Why shouldn’t the Broncos have interest in Robert Griffin III? He’s 25-years old, a former 1st round pick and won’t command top money once the Washington Redskins discard him as expected. Even more intriguing is the fact he’d play for Gary Kubiak, a disciple of Mike Shanahan who drafted RGIII and turned him into a Pro Bowler and Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Christian Hackenberg (NFL Draft)
Chances are also strong that in the event Osweiler leaves, Elway will turn to the NFL draft for his answer at the position. As of right now three quarterbacks are considered worthy of going in the top 15. There is always the chance one of them falls, but not likely. One scenario Denver will have to consider is grabbing one at the end of the 1st round who might’ve been expected to go somewhere in the 2nd. Christian Hackenberg of Penn State is one such option. Big, strong and a capable thrower, he has endured a lot with the Nittany Lions and showed both his physical and mental toughness.
Connor Cook (NFL Draft)
Currently the winningest quarterback in college football. Connor Cook led Michigan State to three-straight major bowl games, claiming MVP honors in both the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Concerns continue to linger about whether the senior has leadership capabilities given the unwillingness of several teammates to sing his praises. That said, he’s got experience, good physical tools and a considerable clutch factor going for him. He might be worth the look at the end of the 2nd round.
