Dallas Cowboys should wait to draft Tony Romo’s replacement
When Tony Romo went down this season, the Cowboys had little to no long term options to fill in for him. With that and the quarterback’s increasing age, the fans and media have been clamoring for the Cowboys to use their fourth overall pick on Romo’s heir.
With his recent success at the Senior Bowl, North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz has become a hot name for Cowboys fans. Unfortunately for them, Wentz is not the answer with the fourth overall pick. Carson Wentz is the flavor of the month because he was the only legitimate quarterback at the Senior Bowl. It’s easy to shine when you’re surrounded by Brandon Allen, Jeff Driskel, and Dak Prescott.
While Wentz is a fine prospect and he had success at North Dakota State, he’s not worth the fourth overall pick.
A smart move for the Cowboys in the first round would be to draft a defensive stud such as Jalen Ramsey, Joey Bosa, or Vernon Hargreaves. Build the defense with prospects who are proven and wait for the quarterback talent later.
If you wait until the second round or later, you could try your hand at Christian Hackenberg, Cody Kessler, or Jacoby Brissett. While they aren’t givens, they all bring some strong potential and working with Romo and Jason Garrett would do wonders for their careers.
In my opinion, the best option for Dallas is to build defense this year and draft a quarterback next year in a much stronger class. Guys like Deshaun Watson, Brad Kaaya, Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen, and so many more intriguing prospects await for 2017. Don’t settle for a guy like Wentz so high in the draft when Heisman candidates are sitting one year away.
Jerry Jones. Build your defense, trade down for future picks, and find a quality back up quarterback in free agency this time around. Look towards the future and don’t rush a decision that could have 20 years worth of implications.
